I wasnt really sure where to post this, but this section seemed most apt, so here goes - Today in class we were learning about making websites (i've got little photoshop experience, and no real website making experience) - and we learnt that you can make a design in photoshop then port it over to dreamweaver, or you can create sections in dreamweaver and fill it in with your own images, use CSS, etc to style the page. So i asked my teacher what happens when you sell a website to a person, but they want to update it? Say, if its a restaurant and they change their menu, does the person who made the website have to change it for them? Or is there a way to make it so the restaurant person can change it? If so, i'd imagine they wouldnt have the necessary web development skills to change the page they wanted, so is there an easy interface so they can change the content - without ruining the whole page? Like, i dont know, but when you sell a website, i imagine the person you're selling to (so in this case the restaurant) has to pay for hosting etc - but then they also have to do updates to the site content? Or does the original maker update the content for them? If yes to the 2nd part, surely that'd take ages if you made lots of websites for people? My teacher told me that i was thinking too much and i should "go ask the internet" - google hasnt been really helpful cause i dont know what im looking for really, but i figured that you guys are the internet, so i'd ask you! I am sorry if i havent explained things properly, im kinda young / not exactly experienced in website making - so if you could point me in the right direction / make answers as simple and easy to understand as possible that'd be great Thanks, bobd0le (oh and p.s. - If this is in the wrong section please move it)
Oh dear. Your next question to your teacher should be "Why aren't you working in the industry that you're training me for?" --- 1. Photoshop into HTML is a joke. It's as realistic as drawing a car on a napkin and forcing it into a CNC machine. You'll get something out the other end, but it won't be any good. Don't waste your time. Learn to code HTML/XHTML/PHP etc by hand. 2. Updates. I let my clients choose from a "buy the site and walk away", or a "pay a yearly fee and I'll be your bitch", or a "$ per hour for ANY modification/update" contract. Somewhere in between there's an option for the client to update their own site via a CMS (Wordpress, Drupal etc). 3. Hosting. You can either resell hosting to your client, or let them find a totally crap host that YOU end up having to deal with. Get yourself a cheap reseller account at a decent hosting company. You can then host as many clients/sites/domains as you want, depending on what you charge your clients for hosting you can make your money back from ONE client - which leaves you with FREE hosting to host your own sites. Welcome to DP. You're asking all the right questions
