My design blog reached PR1 a while ago. and I have no clue how. It's not very popular. I have not promoted it at all besides myspace and twitter.

I'm still learning link development so Im a newbie.

what could have bumped it to PR1?

Check backlinks to your site and you'll get the answer.

It's a combination of content and backlinks.

As you are saying that you are not doing any link building for you blog, but someone else likes your blog and links to it.

Sorry to break it to you but PR 1 doesn't mean a hill of beans. Links from MySpace & Twitter could have been enough.

I'm assuming the link in your sig is the blog you're talking about - if so - these forum links count too.

And yeah... Google will show you more and more love the more links you get. I wouldn't focus too much on PR... It's definitely a lagging indicator... and even then I don't think it means that much.

I have a blog that has only a PR 3 but it gets a ton of love from Google as far as search rankings... it seems stuck on that PR 3 (I think it's been there for well over a year) but I'm not too concerned about it as long as it keeps climbing in the search rankings (which it is.)
