Question regarding W-8Ben Form

Discussion in 'Commission Junction' started by alka, Nov 27, 2007.

I am from India. I want to submit the W-8 form to commission junction but the problem is I dont have a Tax Id or PAN number. Is it necessary to fill the tax id in the W-8 from. If any Indian commission junction affiliate can help?

W8 is a tax exemption form for anyone outside the USA. It basically tells CJ that we're not required to pay US taxes. CJ can apparently withhold a certain percentage of your income (30% I think) if they don't have a signed W8 on file.

    EDIT: here we go...

I also just printed and filled out the form. But all I could fill out was my name, address, and CJ account number. I am really clueless as to what other sections I have to mark on the form, as well as how to fill them in. If anybody else has successfully filled this form out, please help us too! :D

still not sure about part 9 of the form where they say there must be a treaty between your resident country and USA. I dont know about India has a treaty with USA or not?

    My 2 cents...
Just tick 9A. Leave the rest of #9 blank.

I really don't think CJ go over these forms with a magnifying glass. I'm guessing they just file them away in case the IRS knocks on their door. Or yours (which is kinda unlikely).

One US company I applied to sent me forms to apply for that tax id# and it was really complex and not neccesary. In the end, I filled in the w8-ben (which I've done for several US jobs) and all was well. You don't need the tax #, just leave it blank.
    Cheers

    Thanks Dana...
alka, fresh: we Dont need a tax no. Actually w8 form is also used by foreign citizens living in the U.S. who NEED to have a tax no./ssn. Hence they have this field in this form.
Since you are neither a u.s. citizen, nor living in the u.s., nor paying taxes to the u.s. gov., you dont need to have a tax id etc. Hence, you'll get your FULL commssion from CJ, and thus you dont even need to bother if your country and the U.S. have a treaty or not..

    Hope this helps...

Thanks for that reply absinth - I'd already done one for CJ but that was months ago and now have to do another for someone else, so this is a great help to me also.
