Hi, I have been doing a lot of keyword research as of late and I have a couple questions before I proceed. 1. Since I am new to this, I have heard different numbers of global searches I should be looking for when trying to find a good keyword. I would just like that to be clarified. Should it be a couple thousand, maybe like 12,000 or in upwards of 40,000 global searches. 2. Should I focus on just a single keyword or phrase, or should I try to target a few different words or keyword phrases? 3. Lastly, is it possible that after my site takes off in a couple months or years or whatever, that I then focus on more competitive keywords, or do I always use the same one or two I started with? Thank you for your help in advance
That depends on how you're monetizing the site. But make sure you're using "Exact Match" for the search numbers. Scroll down just a bit on the following link and you'll see about what you can expect IF YOU REACH THE 1st Page http://training.seobook.com/google-ranking-value#2 I'd guess you're likely using the search numbers from the Google Adwords tool? If so just keep in mind those figures are for Google only and not the other searchengines, article directories, social sites, etc. I generally guesstimate around a 5% click thru for page 1 of Google and work from those numbers. From that 5% the CONVERSION/CLICK S will probably be around 2-10% depending on your site. That's just a rough estimate and you'll have to try and factor in the CPC to see if it's a profitable keyword. Generally I estimate 2000 searches = 100 clicks = 2-5% conversions. But keep in mind the search numbers are only estimates, they take the previous 12 month average. So don't cut the search numbers to close. Also note that if you're monetizing with Adsense that the CPC the Adwords keyword tool uses is the search network, the content/display network that just about everyone uses is significantly lower. As for focusing on one keyword you're probably not going to be able to generate enough traffic, if the closely related keywords can generate enough traffic then yeah a "themed" site may work. But Google seems to favor "authority sites" with hundreds of pages more now since the Panda update. As for going after just one or two keywords you're probably not going to be able to generate enough traffic, the keywords with the higher search volumes are either to competitive, or not very profitable. Awesome, that helped so much. I am planning on monetizing through an affiliate product i have purchased on clickbank that I like a lot. Any other tips?
