Question regarding hyphens in domain names

Can someone explain to me why hyphenated domains are greatly undervalued when compared to premium domain names. I understand that they will be in less value than a premium due to the radio advertising aspect but this is the only critera I can see that is different. Surely this cannot have such a dramatic drop in valuation? When you perform a search on google for a premium domains keywords or keywords with a hyphen, they return the same results so they have the same attributes regarding SEO. Can someone explain this to me please?:p

    supply and demand.

widgetstore and widgetreviews will almost always be taken.

widget-store and widget-reviews? much more likely to be free.

... when you start moving into super-widget-store.info, things get much worse, obviously :)

I think that putting hyphens in is just plain lazy.

There is usually always a suitable domain available without using a hyphen. It just takes some creative thinking to come up with it. ;)

James Brausch's Nemeas software lets you score domain names for search engine ranking. In the list below, the keyword was 'widget'.

    333,http://www.widgetstore.com/
    347,http://www.widgetreview.com/
    192,http://www.widget-store.com/
    178,http://www.widget-review.com/

The score is the number on the left hand side.
