Question on URL choice in SEO: To www. or not to www. ?

Forgive me if this sounds silly .. I'm starting to promote a new site via directory submission and other methods and was wondering if putting www. before the domain name makes a difference?

For example, should I put http://doshdosh.com or http://www.doshdosh.com when submitting it to directories/search engines and listing it on other websites or forums? Should consistency be the important factor here?

Any advice would be much appreciated... thanks!

Do either, but i would have a 301 re-direct to the one you decide you want to use, from the one you arent :)

Thanks for all the replies .. so there really isn't any special difference in how search engines look at each url?

No - just be consistent. Google Sitemaps lets you choose which one you prefer.
