Question on checking backlinks...

Question on checking backlinks...I have a client who has a Google PR5 site, despite only showing 21 backlinks using the "link:www.whatever" command, so we're not totally sure how.

I use a tool that automatically checks for backlinks on a site for Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc (ie, the ones I don't care about). Using the tool for one client's site, it shows 21 backlinks, none of which are higher than a PR3. There's also a message about Google not showing all backlinks under 3 now when you do the "link:www.whatever" search, and are either showing random backlinks, or showing the backlinks that are considered "relevant".

Another part of the tool shows the results of just looking for "www.whatever" in Google, basically showing any pages that Google knows of that have the website listed (link or not, I presume). For that search, my client has 607 pages shwoing the domain.

So my question is, would it be possible that some of the 607 links are influencing his PR, not just the 21 that they're showing using the "link:" command?

I know PR from the toolbar really isn't that important of a thing, it was just something we noticed that was pretty high for this site, and we were surprised when we didn't find many links pointing to it.

    Thanks for any opinions/feedback.

Among others, I have a PR2 site with 1 incomming link and one PR3 site with 6 incomming links, according to the tool here at digitalpoint.
Not even great links - basic link exchange with both sites, as they are somewhat on standby for the moment.

Not really an answer, just similar situation...

Google only shows a "sample" of websites linking. Used to be, it was PR4 and above links showed. Now, it's just some random links. Yahoo is much more accurate for finding backlinks from my experience.

Well, if it truly was random, how come it seems to stay the same?
I mean, if the number is generated by counting random links, wouldn't it result in some swings over time?

It actually tends to be viewed along the same lines as the phantom sandbox .... Google sandbags backlinks and doesn't show 100% of links and it will incrementally "release" more as time goes by and backlinks on the various data centers update and synchronize.

Also, remember that you may get different results doing different queries:

    link:freshdames.com
    link:www.freshdames.com
    link:http://freshdames.com
    link:http://www.freshdames.com

Also, depending on what data center (DC) you're pulling from will make a difference at times.
