I just have a bit of a general question - I bought a season of a TV show once it came out on DVD, does that make it legal to have .avi files of that on my computer? I remember reading somewhere a long time ago that it's okay to have digital copies as long as you also own the hard copies of things.

Yes, you can. As long as you have the copy, you can have it on your computer. If I'm not mistaken Shawn Hogan of this forum went to court against the MRAA for this, but he claimed he had the actual dvd, when he downloaded it. Correct me if I'm wrong on this one.
