Question: How to determine number of backlinks

Title says it all. What exactly do I need to do to find out how many backlinks I have. I try this service, but it never appears to change, despite forums posts and directory submissions.

Thank you very much in advance

I attempted to do that, and I got

Your search - link:www.thetutordirect.com - did not match any documents.

Does that mean I am still in sandbox?

If your search returns no results, it means links you probably dont have any links pointing to your site. It is good to do this search in several engines. Here are the results for your site:

    Google: Returned 0 results
    Yahoo: 98 results
    MSN: 8 results

    I hope that helps you.

A few years ago Google showed all links, then only from sites with decent pr and now Google only lists a small selection of back links, if any at all.

    Google doesnt show all links.
    Yahoo, i think does.
MSN, will need to index more pages in order to give u a more accurate picture.

But yeh, u will need to try on more than 1 search engine. Even though Google doesnt show u 100% of the results, it doesnt mean they havent recorded it.

I like using link hounds/seo book's link harvester because you can filter out sites such as your own and it also shows unique C-class IP's as well as informational sites(.edu's, .gov's, etc). Really sweet SEO tool, check it out at http://www.linkhounds.com/link-harvester/backlinks.php

Yet another question. Does anyone know how to get a list of all these backlinks? The problem is that by using SE's query "link:www.sitename.com" you can get the 1st 1000 URLs only.

Is there a way how I can find the remaining URLs since if I have 1000+ backlinks?

Try the http://www.uptimebot.com/ website, it searches over 10 search engines and reports the number of backlinks to your website.

The backlink search you have listed for Yahoo searches for text and not hyperlinks. The site has 159 links in Yahoo

I had read that Google only shows links that have PR 3 or higher. I don't know exactly if that is 100% true.

I have a question regarding MSN. I have been adding backlinks continuosly for a long time now for one of my site. What happens is, that sometimes MSN shows 1000+ links and sometimes it is just 800. These days, It is only 650+ when all my links are in tact for a long time now.

    Why?

In the past Google would only display links that were PR4 or higher. Fior quite some time now, they only display a sampling of the total links, and it's usually the lower quality links.

I see links fluctutating in MSN also.

I would not worry about what the search engines are reporting for backlinks and continue with your link campaign. I would base the success on the increase in visitors and search engine rankings over the number of links the SE's report.

It may take upto one month to catch a back link by google. I think google shows all the back links it has in its database. But updating its database take time.

I mentioned that point because this fluctuation is hurting the rankings for one of my site both on msn and google. Sometimes it is on 6th and the next day, it would be on 8th or 9th

MSN has mentioned that they do split testing at times to try out new engines and it's possible that you might be seeing those results.

I see fluctuations of some of our results on MSN regularly, and for other terms, they're quite stable.

It's not uncommon to see Google's results fluctutate regularly.

The only engine where I see any stable results for longer than a few days is Yahoo, as they appear to update less frequently than MSN and Google. I think Yahoo's last update was on May 29th, so we should be seeing one in the very near future.
