How do you protect your ebook from being distributed for free by someone after they purchase your ebook? Are there solutions out their like DRM to protect an ebook from getting distributed for free once someone purchases it? Basically, I don't want my ebook all over those file sharing sites and posted all over the web.

Well, if you let people to DOWNLOAD the book (save it on their computer) then there is unfortunately no way to protect it. (to my knowledge). If you give ONLINE access only to the e-book - there are certain ways to protect it - but many customers might not be happy about it.

so is the normal way to sell an ebook just to allow customers to download it and hope they don't share it with others for free?

Yes. This is how it usually happens!
From time to time you can search google for "Name of your ebook torrent" - this is where they usually share files. If it is on there you could write an email to the tech team and kindly ask them to remove it. Many of them would actually do it.
