question for those earning over 5k month

    Hi guys,
for those of you earning over 5k / month, I am just wondering

    1) How long did it take you to get there, from when you were doing just $xxx / month

    2) At any point did you start seeing exponential growth, or was it linear growth throughout ?

I've been running sites for a few years now, but i've unfortunately always underestimated Adsense (until just a few months back). So I'm now battling through the learning curve, but it is lots of fun.

The big jump for me was when i started buying targeted traffic from Google and Yahoo. I had to experiment and I had some good niches (I will only say they are in the business and technology sectors) but it only took a few months to get well into the $xxxx range. Of course smart pricing and separate pricing for content (Adsense) and search (ads on Google result pages) and other factors squeezed some profit out but with work I am climbing back up.

You need to see for yourself what your niche(s) can do with purchased traffic.

You mean purchased traffic like adword?

Yes, just like Google encourages you to do. Look at the Adsense home page and you will see the following:

Would adwords be a good source for traffic to a non-ecommerce site like entertainment alone?

It took me eleven months to get to $5k/mo.

I have seen unsteady but linear growth for the 24 months I have been doing this.

Of course, it's linear from a distance. Some days seem exponential at the time. :)

I would think not but it might work. Would there be advertisers willing to pay you well for clicks?

You might want to go to overture.com and go into their resources to see what kind of traffic and bids your topic receives. I always look there in my research and see how the third, fifth, and tenth bid look if it has good volume. If the first couple of bids are high and others in the top ten are affordable, you may be able to buy low and sell high.

It doesn't necessarily translate to success with Adwords but it's a good early check.

I have had a site that has been around for about four years it was averaging about 3,000 uniques per day until I added a blog in August. Since August I have added about 200 pages of new content. My traffic has gone off the scale.

    Yesterday I had 9,010 uniques.

    Ka-Ching!

If one has a largely adsense-revenue-driven site, assuming moderate cpc (say $0.75), would using-adwords-to-drive-up-adsense strategy work?
    Thanks

Man, I must be doing someting wrong then. It has taken me 11 months to get about $1XX mark. Maybe I just have to bite the bullet and figure out which site to by keywords for. How much should one budget for adwords to just get things "moving?"

I am more interested in using the cheaper PPC networks to drive traffic to AdSense.

Yes, there are cheaper ones, but you have to admit, Adwords does a great job from a managment aspect. Miva (find what) is clunky, and Heck, overture, it seems you have to wait for a week until your keywords are approved.

I was thinking of the really cheap and off-the-wall ones like FineClicks. :)

Over half of my traffic is PPC. The traffic I plan on is the PPC traffic, I can control it. I buy from Google, Yahoo, MSN, 7search, and a few others. I consider any natural traffic to be a bonus which might not always be there.

Tbarr, really excellent points. Maybe I'll try some experiments tonight with Google.

I don't know. Maybe I just haven't tried a big enough budget, but I haven't seen much help from Adwords. I do still use it, but I cut it back to less than $100.00 a month.

At one time I had it at around $300.00 a month and saw no difference in traffic. My traffic is fairly good - 7,000 to 10,000 uniques per day, but has stayed pretty much the same regardless of Adwords.

Maybe I need to throw more money at it? For those who have found it successful, how much do you let it have? Have you tried experimenting with lesser and greater amounts and tracked that against increased/decreased Adsense? What kind of ratios do you expect to see?
