How much would you charge to build an ecommerce site for somebody and maintain it? including seo, graphics design, script installation etc.

It really depends on the scope of work.

Number of pages, competition of keywords for seo, amount of monthly maintenance needed...

    I wouldn't charge any less than $2k.

and maintain it? You'd be looking to ask for a wage if it's on going maintenance.

thousands..... anyone quoting you less will be very poor or inexperienced. Also you would expect to pay maintenance money on a contract basis.

You would need to provide some fairly detailed specifications in order to receive an accurate quote. If you're looking to do it on the cheap, then grab a website template to take care of the design... there's plenty of sites you can buy them from and pay less than $50. For the shopping cart, take a look at open source solutions such as OS Commerce. It's free, and relatively easy to configure. Alternatively, you can check your web hosting account control panel... click on Fantastico and you'll see a list of shopping carts you can install with a single click. Then all you need is a payment processor, the least expensive for low volume is Paypal as there's no setup or monthly fees. If you can't set this up yourself and you need to pay someone to assemble these items rather than create them from scratch, then you'll save a fair amount of money. As for running the site... do it yourself. Once it's up and running there should be very little if anything to do other than promote it.

I would probably ask for a few thousand to create and maintain it.

It's expensive but you expect quality then you got to pay for it.

As said above it really depends on the amount of work involved and without knowing the full details of the project it's hard to give you a price.

With regards to maintaining the site, one way is to charge on a monthly basis, work out how many hours work are involved per month and charge accordingly.
