In Britain (where social class is still more important than race) the big thing is accents. George Bernard Shaw said "An Englishman can't open his mouth without making another Englishman despise him." Several surveys have said that the accent English people prefer is the Edinburgh accent. That apparently conveys 'Gravitas, education and refinement'. The least popular accent is from Birmingham in the West Midlands.

So in your countries is there a regional accent that really grates? And one that implies the speaker is educated and refined?

Brummy - urgh! Give me a nice soft Scots accent any day. Or my native tongue - kind of soft Geordie.
