I was wondering if i am writing quality articles which are interesting and to the point, should i expect to have backlinks from websites to the article.
I am thinking of writing 4-5 articles a week and would like to know the views of the masters here as i am a complete novice to the link building.
I am a web programmer and designer not a SEO specialist so all your suggestions are welcome.
    Thnx

Write a quality article and posting it in your blog doesn't give you backlinks.
You can use your article and then re-post it in article directory like ezine. Leave some backlink in your body article or footer.

Just writing a quality article and posting it in your blog won't earn an edge in this market today. U still have to build backlinks.:) And Article Submission is an inexpensive tool for marketing your products online on the World Wide Web. Each article provides a back link to your site and contributes to your sales and profit margins. This marketing technique makes sense and is easy to create. The back links are secure and do not permit clones to take your business away from your organization.
    hope help:D

I would suggest you to write one big article with something like "100 ways to get inbound links". You can just write one such article instead of 20 others.

People are going to see that this is so comprehensive and so are going to link to you...

Good quality well written articles post on your site will earn you trackbacks and sites in turn will post your RSS feeds on their site if you become an authority in your niche.

Also good titles and keywords will gain you clicks from search engines.

As I have said before as someone who has 35 domains, the sites that get clicks from Google search engines seem to gain PR faster and move up the search engines faster than those that dont. I bookmark all equally so I believe their is huge advantage given by Google to sites that are clicked from searches within Google. For that reason I recommend focusing more on your content and backlink on occasion. Content is king.

Write a good articles is just the first step. Next you need to submit article to social bookmarking such as digg, del.icio.us, reddit, etc. If your article can breach their main page not only backlink you'll get at least thousand visitor/day...

This the the best white hat method of getting back links.Remember the content of site matters. All other aspects like designing of site and spending money, article submission or anything related to SEO and promotion comes after content.

For eg - Have you ever saw that people from sites like mashable, techcrunch, lifehacker, digital inspiration, woork etc promoting there site in free directory, buying links,or else.

Now designing aspect - boingboing the famous blog.but design is so simple and not so appealing as other blogs. But visitors are tremendous.

    hence content is the king.
