I was applying for a job online, they have requested me to upload a CV.

So, where am i supposed to write the cover letter ?

Should it be the first page of the resume.doc file ?

    OR

Should i write another cover letter.doc file ??

In my opinion, a separate document for your cover letter would be better. In a real life situation, you'd ideally have 1) A resume, 2) A cover letter, 3) A recommendation.

So, a separate cover letter would make you look more professional.

    Use one .doc file.

Traditionally, the cover letter and resume are two separate documents. However, that's in printed form. You don't want one to get separated from the other. And that's what could happen if you use two .doc files.

In the printed world, separation is always a concern. Just think how easy it would be for one of the .docs to get lost. Your cover letter is vital.

Ideally, you'd want to upload a PDF, because it's cleaner and has better navigation.

Here's a link to putting the cover letter and resume in one document in Word. It may or may not be completely up to date, but it should give you a good start.
