Question about website age vs ranking

My website is 4 years old and ranks No. 6 in Google results for my best search phrase. The 5 websites above us in Google results are 7 to 13 years old. Is it unlikely that we will break into that top 5 without a major heroic effort in optimization?

The older the better but more important is the quality of links and the relevance of the content to the search terms.

    good luck

You can compete with them, just obtain some high quality and very relevant links AND continue to create great content.

You need more backlinks. Try getting links from blogs, forums and edu sites. Each search engine puts alot of emphasis on backlinks. Try to add a set # of links each day to build the # up.

age has lot to do with ranking but 4 years and 7 years would not make that much of a difference i think. what can a person avhieve in 7 years that you cannot in 4? number of backlinks....so if you focus on building some quality backlinks, then you should go higher in SERP

Let me tell you, I have a client campaign which is now in top 5 & top3 for all their major terms and let me also tell you they are all high traffic and high competition terms. When we won the contract, their site was 2 yrs old and the competition site was almost 7+ yrs old.

The client had apprehensions and was told us that it would be great if we could just get them in top 10 because top5 would be unrealistic, considering the fact that all the sites in top3 were in that slot were 'old' sites and had been doing aggressive campaign to remain there. Rest of the sites were Gov. sites or wikipedia entries.

Trust me, the goal was tough but it took us 24 months of aggressive SEO campaign to reach the top slot for specific terms and then it was no looking back. Since, then we have pushed more keyterms into top 10 & top5 slots and are currently maintaining top positions for their major high selling/business terms.

This is not happened to us by fluke or for the first time, we have refrences from clients to provide for whom we have repeated this. Some may say that people who promise to help their site break into top 10, are being unrealistic or desperate to get your business. Some may be but not all. Because with the right tools and logistics, it is possible for the site to achieve its goals but it cannot happen overnight. Just like it takes passion and effort to climb the Everest, doesn't happen in a day does it. :)

So, what I am saying is that it is quite Possible to break into the top 5 slot for your keyterms but it requires honest effort from the SEO company's end to help their client achieve their business goals. :)
    All the best!

Buying links hardly improve your rankings but can harm your site a lot and your site may be penalised by google. Kepp on building more quality links to your site it will sure benefit your site to improve rankings......or help to outrank your competitors.....

Though domain age is advantage of a site but you can outrank old-age site with your newly publish one. Proper on-page and off-page optimization is the key to outrank that site. Continuous promotion and link building will also push your ranking to top.

Age is important, but it is not the sole factor that determine the rank. My site is only 1 year old, and can still outperform other old sites in many key phrases.

Yes you can break into the top if-
Your Content and incoming links are good
and the sites ranked above your site are not maintained properly.

If you keep pushing content and backlinks that are better than theirs then yes, you will outrank. 1 month and 4 years is a big difference between websites, but as time goes on the gap between 5 years and 9 is much less significant.
