Question about using "pen" in illustrator; Web 2.0 graphics

Today's my first day using Illustrator, so I suck. I'm looking at this tutorial:

    http://www.learnit2.com/tutorial 018/index.html

I'm fine until I get to the part where I have to use the pen tool to create the "s" curve. I finally figured out how to make the curve, but then I'm not sure how to proceed. In the tutorial picture, the curve's selection box also covers the image... when I create the curve, the selection box only covers the height of the curve.

I'm sure the solution is embarrassingly simple, but for the life of me, I can't figure it out. Thanks for any help!

You are doing everything right. It is just that you have only the curve selected whereas they have everything selected. If you look closely at the picture all of the points on the badge/ star are highlighted.

Once you master that pesky pen tool you will be unstoppable!
