Question about upgrading PHPLD

Right now I have www.FreeDeepLinks.com set up on PHPLD 2.1 or whatever it is. I've been thinking about upgrading in a few weeks when I'll have more time to spend on it. My main question is this:

Will the template I used, and all of the changes I made to it, still work if I upgrade?

I'm not particularly stuck on the layout, color scheme, or anything really. So it wouldn't be the end of the world if I have to use another one and adapt it, as long as I can find one where I can keep the basic info in the right column and header.

It's just that I'm planning to make some changes to the home page this weekend or early next week, to feature individual articles on that page, in addition to the featured categories in the header. I don't want to take the time to do that if I'm just going to have to re-do it a few weeks anyway.

Also curious, b/c if it means adapting another template entirely, then I want to make sure I have the time set aside to do that before I upgrade and switch.

I appreciate any info about it. :)

    Jenn

    Hi, Jhmattern

With out seeing your mods in detail its hard to say but you should take it for granted that moving to V3 will need work and you will have problems with 99% of most mods.

Also i have run both at the same time, using v3 for my backend (admin panel) and v2 for my front-end (bit the users sees) its works sweet with no problems to mods. When the new V3 template is ready i'll just switch my front-end to the v3 format.

I am in the processes of going to v3, "must say the features are pretty sweet" although there seems to be a problem with the basic V3.6 script, as it now looks like i will have to subscribe to the V3 help Forums.

V3.6 Problem: It all works fine apart from the mailer, when i send an email to someone who’s link has been approved it will not go pass the ignore warning and send?

Anyway hope this has helped you.

Thanks for the help. :) I really don't mind if I have to start from scratch w/ a different template as long as I find one where I can easily have the side column working. I just wanted to know if it was something to start looking into so I can account for that time before upgrading. I'll probably keep the coming changes really simple then so it's not a big deal to re-do them. Thanks! :)

V3 comes with 3 templates with different layouts for you to mod. There is one with a side column.

Thanks. I'm not really crazy about those, even just as a basic layout. I'm sure I'll find something once I look a bit. :) And if not, I'll just hire someone since I haven't even attempted learning how to do it myself yet. :)

    Hello,

I own phpldtemplates.com and do about 6 templates per week, so I know what I am talking about here.

The template will not upgrade. The later versions of phpld use a newer templating system, and is completely different than what you currently have.

If you upgrade your script, you will need to have someone, or yourself, completely redesign your site to match the current design.

@Marx If that template is a free template, you should check to see if it is now available in the later version. (3.06)
If it is a custom design, contact your designer and ask if they will upgrade your template for you. It does require quite a a bit of work, but it is easier for an original designer to upgrade their work, than for someone else to first figure out how it was designed, and then upgrade.

I'm not worried about it actually matching the current design. I'm not terribly fond of it anyway, so that's not a worry. Thanks. :)

403 error means the server trying to read/execute the script, but its forbidden for some reason i suggest you check your file permissions.

Yes, that does work. Just make an sql dump backup of your db anytime you are doing changes. However, if you install the new script and use the current db where it is now, it should install fine. No need to import anything.
