I've been active on a political blog for a number of years. I just started a new blog not related to politics and I'm thinking of changing the profile link on the political blog to link to the new unrelated blog - it amounts to hundreds of dofollow links. Question: will this hurt PR? Is "blog" enough of a related category? Or should I not even bother changing over the signature?
I'm not too sure it would be related enough. I'm not sure it would directly harm your PR, but I doubt much page rank would be passed from the links you have. There will be a big "dampening" factor applied for the unrelated theme.
What I don't get though is what if some person - for whatever reason - decided to link to your site from an unrelated forum or blog. Wouldn't this be a way to sabotage a competitor? Google has no way of knowing if the profile link from the political blog belongs to me or not. It could be just someone who wants to link to my site.
Exactly. That's why these types of links don't hurt you. In fact, High PR links from NON-related sites pushed my article to number 19 in Google out of 11.1 MILLION other competing sites. NOT ONE of the links I built to the article were related. Not one. And yet~it's on page two of Google out of 11 MILLION other sites. My friend is on page ONE of Google out of half a million for his keywords, by using the same links I used; the ones I give to my customers in my monthly packets. Just a P.S. My article test proved what I've always thought; what really matters is that your link is on a High PR site. Many of the actual pages on which my article's link is stored are brand new, 0 Page Rank pages. And yet, my article beat over 11 MILLION other competitors for the keyword. It's the site that counts, guys. Not the page. My article is sitting, right this second, at number 19 in Google out of 11.1 million competing sites.
If the site which is giving you link is giving very less links than i think it will count though it will be leesser value than related links. Otherwise it is not of much use.
Where are you all getting this information? I did a "test" of backlinks with an article I wrote and did a backlink campaign. The backlinks I used were NOT "related" (AND they were on High PR sites on pages that had low to 0 PR, too). Yet it moved my article UP in Google by almost 11 MILLION places. Please show me the documentation for proving that what you are saying is true.
First of all there is no such thing as DO FOLLOW its either follow or no follow ! Why would these links hurt your site think about it for a min, if people had their own website and blogs and liked ur site and added a link to their site merely cos they liked ur site, why would you site be hurt by that ? It simply wouldnt, and of course there are the issues mentioned before, a lot of Linking and seo is common sense ! Woc
Yep. Exactly. That's the issue; MANY people mention other sites on their blogs or what have you. Many of them are NOT related. How can this hurt you, since this is "natural" link building and that is what Google wants?
sabotage is not possible. If you think about it, so google thinks about it. Unrelated or poor quality backlinks to your site dont harm your pagerank. But outbound links from your site to poor quality sites will harm your pagerank. Unrelated backlinks doesn't effect serp as much as related ones but they are counted as backlinks
according to me more links from same site is hurting the PR. Now yesterday PR updated then I have lots of BL from digitel point and other forums than before . My SERP is down today. M really wondering and also check my competetors having less links than me from the same domains
no problem you can change the signature to unrelevant link. Its nothing wrong with that. I will not harm you any way yes but the importance you are getting from that page will become less.
