Question about title tag

    I'm ranking 3 in msn for a term like buy widget. My title tag is buy widget product supplier. My problem is that this title sounds like you have to buy the supplier ie pay to get access to a widget supplier.

    Can I just change the title to buy widget | product supplier, without it affecting my ranking ie is the charecter | seen as a change in title by search engines.

    Another option would be to take out the term supplier so it would just be buy widget product, could this decrease my rankings for the term "buy widget".

    To put it simply no it wont.. Unless you are going to remove the "keyword" from the title it wont affect anything

    Why would it affect your rankings? You are not removing the keyword it is ranking on. Plus | (pipe symbol) is normally truncated by search engine bots.

    I wouldn't concern myself about it. ;)

    imo MSN is bit unstable and it would change your rankings for some keywords.

    There is only one way to find out!

    Normally the pages are cached every few days anyway, so if you loose some rankings after the change, just go back to the previous version. Shouldn't be a biggie to (suffer) for a few days...

    That being said, if the ranking keywords are still in the same order and you only change what comes after those keywords, it shouldn't have any effect at all. It normally only affects rankings if the order and/or lenght of the title tag is adjusted.

    i dunno... i had a page ranking at #2, changed the title and 2 days later it was dropped to #87!!
    based on reading here and in other forums, other sites dropped in MSN after making similar changes..

    Title heps in directories and for Bots too.

    But i prefer dont exceed the limit of title.
    Instead use titles for hrefs , its good idea for SEO

    Indeed Title tag is not a critical factor for your ranking! Instead pay more attention to outbound links and content :)

    It will only hurt you if people actually find your site by searching for "buy widget supplier" and not only by "buy widget."

    So check out to see if that's the case, and if it's not then drop that punk :)
