Question about submitting to 12,000 directories and link building:

Will google penalize you for submitting this many?

I think it depends how long you plan to do it over. If it happens overnight through automated software with the same anchor texts and descriptions then yes its possible, but if its happened gradually over a year or 2 maybe not...

Most directories wont approve your link right away, 1,000 new links a day is acceptable

I wouldn't waste my time or money on such an offer. While Google may or may not penalize such an action, they will most likely not count such links. Links built up that fast will not look natural, especially once you're done submitting and your new links drop off drastically.

In my opinion there are better things to spend your money on.

Wise words here. I would totally agree, hammering a load of directory links into a new site will always look a bit suspicious in Google's eyes

If Google penalizes sites for getting lot's of links too fast, i'll crush my competition.

Now, how dumb this sound?

Depends upon how many variations of anchor text you use, as well as how spread out the link building is and how low quality the directories are.

It would work better if you submit to blog and forums etc.
