Question about sub-domains

    Hi,

    Here is my situation :

I have about 3 or 4 web sites on non TLD, (read: free hosting w/no ads).

In the future I plan to add at least 3 or 4 more sites.

My idea is to get a domain , something short like xtob.com or whatever then host all of my sites through subdomains such as :

    coolstuff.xtob.com

Are there any reasons this may be a bad idea ?

    Thanks in advance,

    -me

    Not really,
Are these sites connected to each other in term of content ? If yes, why not just make a home page and connect them via directories.
Remember that adding a sub-domain creates a new domain, just the same as if you had www.abc.com and www.xyz.com on the same server or virtual host, so crosslinking between the main domain and the subdomain can be seen as a link scheme by the search engines. This could result in a penalty according to some people....
Many sites (About.com being one of the best examples) use subdomains quite successfully when it comes to SEO.
So say if you have keyword1.abchost.com, and get backlinks for it with the anchortext keyword1 that could help you! But if you link among your subdomains that could be considered as crosslinkin by Google!
    Just my 2 cents

    hrmm..

thanks for the info, i didnt consider that (the link scheme part).

the sites aren't really related but they do all currently link to one another.

i guess i just might have to suck it up and get all the domains then eh ?

    thanks again,

Yes and domains are not big deal these days. specially Yahoo offering them for 2.99 these days and Buy.com offering Godaddy domains for 79 cents!
If you need free hosting leave a PM to me!

Almost all good domains are no longer available except if one is lucky enough to compete to get those expired domains.

If you are thinking of getting good domains, many good Chinese domains (.cn, hk.cn, .tw., etc.) are still available.
