Question about setting up Conversion tracking / cookies

If you have a moment I could use some suggestions:
My friend has an established company with a well known product line and he just launched an e-commerce site to try and expand his sales volume and increase his market share. I have offered to help him out with SEO and online marketing and in return he wants to give me a % of the profit from the sales that I generate. I have a couple years of SEO/Internet Marketing experience but I don't know exactly how to track this? (or what a fair price to charge is)?
I will mostly be creating monthly email newsletters, designing and running banner ads on targeted sites, maintaining a few pages on social networking sites, and establishing backlinks... so, I will be able to use specific links and cookies but I really don’t know what is involved in setting this up?
I was looking at the "goals" section of Google Analytics and from what I could tell, this will allow me to track sales, but how do I differentiate between sales that were generated by my actions and sales that were a result of direct traffic (via print marketing or word of mouth)...
If anyone can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. In addition, if setting this up is more than I am capable of, I would be willing to pay someone to help me get this configured.
Thanks for your time! I look forward to hearing from you :)
