Having the best of the best is not always logical or feasible. You need to breakdown exactly what you need and work it from there. I worked at companies which had web servers ranging from $25,000 and up! So I can sit here and tell you the best of the best, but it probably wouldn't be the best choice for you.

Read this article I wrote a few years ago, it will help you with making your choice --- it's still relevant today.

    Good luck.

Servers do not require graphics cards.

Servers are not made up of " the most powerful hardware " they are built using the most reliable hardware.

    Hard drives - SATA WD Raptors ( 15,000RPM )

Air Flow is a big concern when it comes to server cases, sufficient fans ( but not too many ) are a big concern also.

Ram - Linux can handle as much ram that you throw at it, however depending on the development environment on a windows server, you may want to reconsider large ram.

motherboards - most large brands of mobo's produce a server series/range. Research your motherboard model, you want it to be satisfactory for upgrades in the future also.

Ram is cheap nowadays. Get alot of these ram and go with at least SATA II hard drive.
In fact, CPU is real cheap nowadays too!

But do make sure your motherboard is in good quality. Once the 'heart' of the system is down, all other 'organs' failed too. :)

    Hi crazy.works
By you asking this blanket question makes me assume you are a novice and don't understand the complexity of the question you ask. There is no single best hardware system --- we need to know a lot more about what you intend to use the server for. Database server? File server? Game server? Web server? Domain server? What OS will be installed? Will it be hosted at a data center or in the home? Much more information is needed to give a best estimate.

I repeat ... "there is no single best hardware"

    (best) It's a marketing gimmick . . .

Also, I honestly would strongly suggest not cutting lines and getting regular PC components, you really should look into getting server-grade hardware, it will pay off on the long term.

Here's a server which should be able to handle all processes on a single server:
    http://www.sun.com/servers/coolthreads/t5440/

It starts at $45K and has top of the line hardware. However, I do not recommend having a single server for all things under the sun, just not a good setup.

Are you wanting to create a webserver? if so your much better off going with a hosting package for anything like that. Those companies (the reputable ones anyways) are on top of technology, manage your servers, upgrade hardware/software and will get faster lines and more redundancy than most people can afford. Just a thought, spend the $12.mo and get ahold of hostgator or someone similar.
