You're absolutely right. No need to place the link on your homepage if you not get any extra benefits from that directory. For reciprocal link, you can place anywhere on your site page whether its rank is 10 or 0. If you want to see some stupid guys, Linkmarket.com is the best example. Here some web owners are doing strange work. Here, every webmasters have a link page where they place other links to get good rank on search engines. But when you wanna to visit some of there link page through homepage, you'll not find any link from the homepage nor from any internal page. Means the link page has no linked with other pages. In this condition, how can search engine find your link on that site? They just placed the page and place the url of the link page on Linkmarket.com like http://abcd.com/link.htm. This link.htm has no linked with other pages. But how can a script understand whether the page is linked with other pages or not if not index like Google. Linkmarket.com just check your url whether is belongs or not through the given url on that webmaster link page http://abck.com/link.htm. Actually what is happening on there, I think they does not know. So, friends be aware. The world is oval but this Internet is totally round.
Just to pass the submission check, it doesn't matter where to put the reciprocal link. But many directory owners will reject a reciprocal link if you put it in a page with thousands of directories, or in a list with thousands of directories and his directory is on the 10+ pages.
