Question about public domain photos

I read recently that there are government sites that have tons of photos that are considered to be public domain, and that most any picture taken by a government paid photographer is free of copyrights and safe to use for any purpose. Is this true before I go snagging up a bunch of them to use for a wallpaper site haha?

Usually, you can use public domain materials for any purpose, including commercial. So, yes.

Most US government agencies consider photographs they take as public domain material since they were produced with taxpayer's money. But you need to make sure you can use the images for each case as not all governments nor all government agencies allow free use of their images.
