Question about permalinks in wordpress

Hello, I recently deleted the static pages at www.example.com and followed the instructions on how to move my blog from www.example.com/blog/ to www.example.com/ now my questions are, number one, how do I point people coming from old links that I couldnt edit, to the new location, and second is, how do I remove the /index.php?/ part of urls that is there now? answer 1 - use 301 redirect
answer 2 - use permalink option in your wordpress admin.
