A friend of mine who is a commercial music producer from India, recently produced some music for a guy from australia, the person offered to pay via PayPal and Only PayPal ... Now this fellow opened an account added his card n became verfied and then accepted the payment about 1000$ from the client ... Using this money, he shopped on ebay, got a site designed done via scriptlance , bought a domain, server and started a forum, the forum has now 300+ members ... all friends and it's all kool .. Now my friend closed his PayPal account, but after 10 days or so of the payment, and 2 days of closing his account, he received an email from paypal on the same email he ws using tht he was a receipent of potentially fraud funds ....Now this fellow is scared ... what can happen of this ?? Will his domain/server be gone ??? What about the ebay shopping he did ?? And what about the scriptlance payment ?? He asked me, and so I thought better open a thread here ...! Please post replies people ... Regards, Abhishek
Does he know that the email was really from paypal? There are a lot of phoney emails that say they are from paypal. Why would someone open and then shut down their paypal account right after they got the money? Anyway, the only one that can answer your question is paypal. If the funds were fradulent, paypal is likely to take steps to recover that money.
well if he has all his emails that ebay and paypal send you after purchasing a prodcut with the price on it if any legal action is taken place he should hold on to those present those tell them how much money he was going ot get out of what he did and the guy might have to pay for the funds out of his own pocket!
Your friend is responsible for paying for any purchases he made. It doesn't make a difference if someone screwed him out of his money - that has nothing to do with the seller he purchased items from. Your friend has to pay for what he purchased and of course, go after the guy who owes him money.
Abhishek my guess is it might have been a fraud email as well as recently I am also getting multiple of these emails from scammers. If it is indeed an email from paypal, in email itself they will mention the exact disputed transaction with dates and other details as well. First make sure that it is indeed a mail from Paypal.
omsolutions, the thing is that the client insisted to pay only via PayPal and it was a good deal, also he had met the person on some show in India! Now he prepared this music set for the client! but since the payment option was only paypal he asked me about it and i told him to get a Paypal account and verify it using his credit card! He did so and received the money! Now since it was of no more use he used all the money online, and then closed his account! He has emailed paypal about it, but i just wanted you guys views on what can be done ? ABhishek
What I meant to say is the email might have been a fraudulant email (not send by paypal at all). First confirm that indeed the email has been send by paypal. http://www.paypalwarning.com/paypal_phishing_email
well, if he gave PayPal his credit card info then PayPal will just take this money off of his credit card, but if not, then he will have negative balance for few months. I am not sure what they are going to do with that negative balance, but somehow I don't think that they will start taking back everything he has spent.
but they still have his credit card info (hey, this is PayPal we are talking about) and they can always reopen his account if needed.
No they can't the agreement has been terminated and paypal has lost all rights to debit funds from the credit card Abhishek
PayPal can do anything but anyway, I'd suggest you to visti paypalsucks.com and I am sure you'll get answer to your question from there.
Abhishek - check for full-headers in your mail and check if the email originated from paypal.com. The from header would defintely contain @paypal.com but that doesnt mean its from paypal. Get the IP mentioned in the mail and trace the IP to check if its from paypal.com server. If its not then the email isnt from paypal and that whats called phishing.
Dude, I have worked as a Cyber Crime Analysis Volunteer!! These were the preliminary things that I did! and yes the Mail was an actualy PayPal email! Abhishek
a person receiving money don't have access to see if the money is coming through wrong ways so his liability (if any) is very very less(rather i would say no liability atall).
Abhishek, best advice I can give is, remind paypal about the termination of agreement. Also, warn your credit card company to not send any funds to paypal without your exclusive permission. Possibly report the credit card to be compromised, that is inform them that its information has been stolen and they will provide you with a new one
