question about niche

Discussion in 'General Marketing' started by jye999, Oct 3, 2008.

I am a newbie who is trying to find a niche keyword to promote my website. I am trying to use google tools to find this keyword. But the question for me is...what exactly is defined as a niche? what should the number of google search results be vs the number in google Keyword Tool vs google trend? Can someone give me a brief idea?

Anything could be a niche :)

    "chairs" is a niche
"wooden chairs" is a smaller niche

You should focus on something with less competition (as you said you're new to SEO, etc.)
Try to find the perfect equilibrium between search volume and competitors.

Zexy, Thanks for replying. I guess that's where I am getting confused. Less competition means less google search result? like less than 1 millions results? And how do I find the equilibrium?

It is better to start a site with niche in which you are more comfortable. Let it be highly competitive or less. You can able to rank quite easily in the SERPs with niches that are low paying rather than for high paying ones where the competition is cut throat nature. So to begin with, target less competitive keywords...

Usually less competition means less search results in Google.
I would suggest you to focus on a few ~500.000 results keywords (if you're new to SEO, etc.).

These tools will help you finding the right keywords:

    http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/
    https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
    http://tools.seobook.com/keyword-tools/seobook/

Here is a keyword strategy for you (just an example):

    - red wooden chairs (your starting point)
    - wooden chair (6 months later, start targeting higher volume keywords)
    - chairs (one day, who knows, when your site is well established).

    I hope this helps.

Thank you both for helping me.
Zexy, that makes clear. I just have one more question. Other than the 6 months milestone, is there other indicator that I can use before I switch to higher volume keywords such as the traffic that is coming in, or page rank, or google result position?

As long as you get in the top 3, you can switch to a higher volume keyword.
It depends on the keywords you're targeting obviously, it's not always possible.
By the way 6 months was just an example. It could be 3-6-12... it's entirely your decision.
