Question about Memory Upgrade?

    I am installing 1gb DDR2 seen here http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Presario%20SR2002X&pl=HP%20-%20Compaq&cat=

The first slot has only 512mb and the slot beside it is empty. I read that slots need to be filled in order. Can I leave the 512mb stick in the slot that it is in, keep the slot beside it empty and put the 1gb stick in the next row(slot), or does the 1gb stick need to go in the 1st or 2nd row, if so I assume it is alright to put the 1gb in the first row and then just move the 512 to the 2nd row?
    Thanks

Ah this is an easy one :p

I'm assuming that you have a total of 4 memory slots from what I've read in your post. Please let us know the make/model of the motherboard you are using..

I'm assuming that your motherboard has 2 channels for the memory, and depending on the make/model those channels could be 1 1 2 2 or 1 2 1 2

If i were you, since you only have 512mb in one channel, I would put the 1gb stick of ram into the same channel -- please note that everyone has their own opinion about doing that (whether or not it bottlenecks the RAM because you're using slower RAM in the same channel)

I hope this wasnt confusing as all hell
