Question about keywords... basically - are they useless?

I've heard from a couple people that they don't use keywords at all, and they actually have pretty well known communities/sites.

Is it... proper to not use keywords anymore? How detrimental is it? If it's not that detrimental then I don't see why I should bother spending hours upon hours of thinking of keywords. That is unless it's "purchased keywords" from adverts.

So basically, "meta" keywords are useless yes?

i can understand why you asked that , because search engins relay on the contnent , but still keywords are important

If somebody does not select any keywords, then doesn't a search engine like google just assume the relvancy of a "phrase" anyway by the content of a page?

I think keywords are useless if this is true.

 

If you are talking about high PR sites and community sites like orkut, Yahoo answers etc, then they dont need any keywords. Can you please clarify what other community sites you are talking about?

If you are trying to promote a niche, and trying to sell products, then of course you need to work on your keywords.

If you're referring to meta tag keywords, no -- they are now totally irrelevant thanks to spammers and no major search engines pay any attention to them.

Keywords are the essencial part of your site. I can't imagine a site without targeted keywords. They helps to define your niche and let searchers find your site according to the SERP. And the most important thing is that you can only rank for some target keywords to get high traffic for your site.

 

You can get traffic in basically three ways: type-in traffic, referrer traffic(includes directories, social sites, video sites, forums, blogs, in short all the other sites) and search engine traffic.

And if you want to get search engine traffic, simply you need to have keyword optimized content pages with keyword optimized backlinks.

Keywords are useful in every site in order to rank high in serp.I think the keyword you are talking about is the keywords in "meta keyword".
