In general it is slightly better to be hosted in your own country, but it is not at all essential. I suggest you go with HostGator just because it will have better service and is possibly a better "neighborhood" than the Romanian hosting providers. The country extension of your domain is sufficient to take care of the geo-targeting aspect. Additionally, if you cater only to Romania, I suggest that you associate your website with Romania in Google's Webmaster Tools. Apart from that for best rankings in Google.ro get a lot quality, relevant of links from Romanian websites and get listed in Romanian business directories.

    Noroc! :)

Absolutely it will influence your SERP in local search (google.ro).

If you have a local targeted website make sure you have an IP / hosting provider from that specific country and also a domain extension for that country.

Furthermore I advice you to start an active linkbuilding campaign target on local high authority websites, blogs and social network/bookmarking sites. Inbound links from country specific domains will influence your SERP for local search results based on the anchor link text.

    Good luck!

Nah, you are making this out to be a major factor. It is not. The country-specific domain extension and Webmaster Tool's take care of it. I say go with HostGator, all things considered.

If you are sure about your target on Google Romania (Google.ro) then I would recommend you to go with Romania based IP web hosting. It will definitely help your site ranking toward Google.ro.

Another option - Go with .ro domain could also help your ranking toward Google.ro either.

@PhilipSEO: Indeed from my perspective it is important to beat competition but NOT the most important element for SEO. I agree on the fact that you can handle some tweaks within Google Webmaster tools but I have a couple of websites that are targeted for the Netherlands running at Godaddy on a .com domain which are performing not as good as my local .nl domain at a dutch hosting provider within the same niche. Both sites running on wordpress with almost same settings. You can also find authority SEO websites/blogs that post about local targeting and the benefits you have from domain extension and local IP.

In the end CONTENT is the mother of all SEO factors.

If you can afford to host, build and maintain both, I would do that. One is then more for international business, the other for local.

If you can't do both, I would go .ro.

I think hosting in Romania can mean more hassle down the road, not less. HostGator spells less hassle for me.

IT IS NOT STRICTLY NECESSARY TO HOST IN YOUR OWN COUNTRY. Period. No need to mindlessly repeat the superstition that hosting in your own country is a must.

I want to correct what I said about Webmaster tools -- you should only enter a geographical region there if you have a generic domain (.com, .net,. org), not a regional one. The country-specific domain extension (.ro) is by itself sufficient for your purpose.

How read this from the horse's mouth:

Sites with country-coded top-level domains (such as .ie) are already associated with a geographic region.

    <...>

If no information is entered in Webmaster Tools, we'll rely largely on the site's country domain (.ca, .de, etc.). If an international domain (.com, .org, .eu, etc) has been used, we'll rely on the IP address. If you change hosting provider for a country domain, there should be no impact. If you change the hosting provider of an international domain to a provider in another country, we recommend using Webmaster Tools to tell us which country your site should be associated with.

Well, to the extent that this is due to geo-targeting factors, I'd wager that the difference due to the difference in domain type and probably has little to do with hosting (that's according to Google, and they likely know a thing or two about this). And in this case the original poster has a .ro domain.

Absolutely! And if it's in the country's primary language, that helps too!

In my own experiences, hosting countries would not have impacts on SERP result. But, generally speaking, hosting companies from USA would be the best for it has the advanced Internet basis. For a detail list of ranking factors, I would recommend you to read article "search engine ranking factors" on seomoz.org

This is a powerfully clueless statement. Why do you feel the need to share your "experience" when Google states explicitly and clearly in which cases server location is a ranking factor and in which cases it doesn't? And why do you feel the urge to post a reference to a Web page that is completely irrelevant to this thread?

In my experience, a great many spammers come to this forum to compulsively offer incompetent and irrelevant "advice" just so they can post links to their shoe shop or similar venture, hoping ridiculously that it helps their SEO and not caring one bit about what they type. (Some other forums have devised ways of minimizing this though an effective reputation scoring system -- something I wish we had here.)

In some niches having local hosting does help slightly in targeting your local Google SE. Though personally I am using a US hosting but I am able to compete with websites from my local country with the .my extension. Our site both uses our native language but I compete by getting backlinks from local sites and blogs. I my opinion getting backlinks from your loca sites is much more important. I can guarantee you that with proof if anyone wants it :)
