Question about inbound links and anchor text

If i have all the sites link to me with "buying used computers online" as the anchor text... will i still rank for "buying used computers" ? or only "buying used computers online" ?

cause the keyword i'm trying to rank for has a bunch of variations with the first 3 words in the anchor text being used...

I'm wondering if i should have all my links use the anchor text "buying used computers" or "buying used computers online"

    thanks for the advice

Each variation is a keyword in itself. You couldn't rank for all of them by using one anchor text (plus as you probably know there is more to it then just anchor texts).

If you consistently use "buying used computers online" then that is what you will rank well for. But the question is if you should go after that phrase. I see no searches for "buying used computers online" compared to 95 searches for "buying used computers" (overture, january).

Do some research for a good keyword (phrase):
    "used computer" - 17529 searches
"used computer dealer" - 1909 searches

and then stick with that one until you rank well for it. Later, if you want to rank high for another variation, optimize a different page (or subdirectory or subdomain) for it.

I would us all those in terms as anchor test on different links and articles. Mix it up, but usw the same word derivatives. Seems natural....hmm...maybe Google will like it.

To answer your original question, yes. It counts for both sets of keywords, and is called keyword combining.

It's a great practice if your target keyword phrase is the full anchor text. Very potent.

However, in your case I would suggest (after doing some KW research for you :D) to simply use the phrase "buying used computers". You could then simply mention on your page that the #1 rule of getting a good deal on a used computer is to look online.

For the record: I am not targetting the keyword "buying used computers" but was just using it as an example..... that's why there are no searches/month for the term i used as an example

and thanks for the advice... anybody care to elaborate a little more into "keyword combining" ?

Does that mean that i was right with my first assumption?

Yes you were. But when keyword combining, the segments lose potency. The full phrase gets full-potency however.

Using different variations of keywords is better technique to improved rankings for different keywords. As long as the variations of keywords contain your targeted keywords.

I would recommend to go to articles-exchange.com. You can exchange articles rather than links and you can create unique articles about your website to be published on different relevant sites

Well Ideally, Keywords/anchors need to be rotated with every single backlink..

But most often, people those are naturally linking, either hook up the title, or certain keyword or the feature...

Though a phrase as an anchor can compensate for keyword combinations but the output of that will be visible only when you have many such combinations making the overall scenario pretty natural, keywords, anchors rotated, and every backlink looks natural as in...

Long phrases do help it on, and you should rotate those anchors periodically if not always...It will help..
