Question about http status code and trailing slash in url

Hope someone can help. I am looking at a potential client site and trying to determine if they have a duplicate url issue which would affect their SEO. The http status code for their homepage returns as 200 for the url, both with and without the trailing slash:
    www.example.com
    www.example.com/

This indicates that no 301 redirect is in place, right?

According to google, this could cause duplicate content issues as the two urls are seen as two different pages.

What I can't figure out is when you visit the site and enter the slash, the site only resolves to a version without the trailing slash, which would make it seem as though a redirect IS in place. Is there a way to redirect one url to another while having them both return a 200 status?
