the client i had already had a web hosting account and domain name so say someone wants you to build a site for them but they don't already have a web hosting account and domain name... do you normally include those thing in your fees or do you explain that to them and have them take care of it? I'm just trying to figure out the best way to go about doing this

    thanks in advance!

You could go either way on buying/controlling domain name for them and arranging hosting.

Personally I would never allow anyone to control my domain name. I have seen developer disappear into ozone and the client have no access to domain name. On the other hand if you as the developer don't control, they tend to change email, fail to update info with registrar, and loose domain name. It is a real catch 22. If you register their domain name for them with their information they are accosted by so called SEOs and those involved in domain name fraud. Whichever way they opt to go, you need to try to impress upon them the importance of their domain name.

One drawback about using their host, is hosting service may provide only the most basic of needs thus imposing restrictions on development options.

Maintenance can be handled on hourly scale or a fixed monthly rate.

I think it's better to let the client handle the domain name and the hosting unless you plan on ruinning a re-seller account. The client should always, in my opinion, own their own domain name. The domain name is a business asset and therefore the business owner should own it.
