question about globalizing a ccTLD

    Hello all,

I was curious in purchasing a ccTLD. I want to jump on the ccTLD bandwagon and use a country code domain. there are already successful sites out there doing the same, for example: last.fm, headliner.fm, blip.fm, lookbook.nu- just to name a few. So I'm interested in changing the name & domain of one of my current sites to a 4 letter mexico ccTLD extension (****.mx) but Mexicans aren't my target audience.

So I'm wondering how this will play out with "serps", SEO and all. I realize that last.FM ( .FM = Domain extension for Micronesia - which are small islands in the western pacific) does the same exact thing I'm looking to do, and is very successful with it (globalizing a local domain extension), so how might you suggest I go about this?

Should I purchase a .com of my 4 letter ccTLD (eg. ****mx.com) first, then once the site has been indexed in all of the big search engines, switch to ****.mx? Or should I just start and stay with the .mx domain? The site "play.me" does what I just mentioned, except they redirect play.me to playme.com.

My understanding on how country code domains play out in search engines is very limited so work with me here ;)

    Thanks!
