Question about Deep Links

I guess the question is simple: Is it important to have deep links to your website, and if so, why?

I'm assuming deep links are links anywhere beyond your index page (I'm just guessing). From what I've read it looks like having deep links is important, probably to SERP, but I'm not sure how heavily they weigh in the grand scheme of things.

    What do you guys think?

deep links are very important for a variety of reasons:

    - it's better to have users go straight to your content in relation to what they were searching for (and not having to navigate from the homepage)
    - it's good to have links that are not only to your homepage
    - deep links, especially when embedded in content, carry LOTS of weight
    - there's generally less competition for specific search terms that will lead to deep pages, this is generally because there is less search volume. but i think that people who search specifically are more likely to act on the information they find. think of them as somebody who goes into a music store and asks for a specific CD by an artist, rather than one that goes in and says "i like rock music, what can you recommend"?

Deep links can dramatically improve your SERPS when they are used correctly....

Lets say you have a website that sells a dog training ebook.

You would build links to the index page with the anchor text "dog training ebook".

Then to help maximize your serps you would then build deep links to the pages within, using one or more keywords from your index page.....So lets say you could do something like "Clicker dog training" as a deep link, that would help improve your keywords "dog training".

I hope that all makes sense to you. Use it and it will work!

It also helps your page rank for your individual pages within the site, which would raise the value of entire website. I have just started working on deep links but it makes sense to me just can't explain it well...

Is it a good idea to submit deep links to web directories, or only the home page? Do many directories allow deep links?

These are all great tips, thanks guys. I especially like the dog site analogy... makes a lot of sense when explained that way.

Deep links that make sense are the way to go. Not only does it help your rankings, but it also takes a visitor exactly where they need to go. Sometimes it can fast track them to buying something from you ;)

Submit deep links if the directory allows it. Most do not, at least the free ones generally don't.

Deep Link will give information more detail and SE will crawl and share it to internet users that looking for specific information by meta keyword.

it will develop your traffic by link exchange that have similiar content.

Remember, we are talking about the internet. The internet is all about information connected by links. Any decent, above-board links — whether "deep" or to your home page — contribute to the "inter" aspect of the internet.

In my opinion, deep links are very important. They help in better indexing of the site and also, in improving the SERPs.

that's where domains come in. http://www.gio-goi-clothing.com points to an inner page on my site, but most directories accept it as it is top level. there's only few that reject, but screw 'em!

just for the record, i do not submit my homepage AND my inner pages to directories as that would be taking the mick a little.

I have also submitted inner pages to free directories and had a little bit of success. If your inner page is very specific and in the right category of the directory you have a better chance.

A great way to do it is to exchange an article, page or post with someone with 3 or 4 deep links in it pointing back to your site where you want. You post each others relevant content. Get a free copy of the 'authority black book', the best linking resource going. It is free.
