Question About Bandwidth Usage and Hosting

    Hey guys,

Now I know that hosting is for online sites, so that the traffic they get is what decreases the bandwidth.

I was wondering is there anyway that you can signup to a company online, or get a server on something that let's you download whatever you like to your computer, without using your home bandwidth?

Basically, it costs something like $70AU here to get 25GB, and we're looking to change companies to get 80GB for around the same price, but their support is horrible and they haven't even emailed us yet.

Anyway, sorry if it sounds like a dumb question, but bandwidth for hosting is so cheap and bandwidth for you to be able to use the net is expensive.

So yeah, if it is possible to get a server or something like that where I can download stuff and it doesn't contribute to the home bandwidth usage.

    Hope I made sense, thanks..

If you use your own connection to download, you will be using your bandwidth. If you use someone elses connection, you are using their bandwidth.

You'll be using both. The host server is sending you the data, so there's their bandwidth usage, and your home connection is downloading the data and there is your bandwidth usage.

You use bandwidth every time you view a web page, download music, watch a video on youtube, etc. You use your own bandwidth and whatever server the site, music, or video is on has the bandwidth used there.

Nowdays many ISP go with unlimited bandwidth plan for broadband already.
Is it more save to subscribe to unlimited plan from your ISP.

In Australia the Goverment wont go to optic fibre cable. Instead we still have the old Copper cable. Which is why Unlimited isen't really popular yet, I think only 4-5 only offer it?(correct me if im wrong?)

I think its a load of rubbish that the Goverment won't do it. Sure it will cost alot, But Copper cable is very old and unreliable.

If you won't to download alot i suggest Dodo they have bigger plans i think for 89.95 you can get 100gb on peak and 100gb off peak? There support is pretty good. And so far where i live i haven't had no downtime yet?

your requirement for bandwidth is very high. dedicated server will be the only solution for you. i would recommend superbhosting, budget dedicated server. Or hostgator for premium dedicated server.

sounds like your looking for a RDP (remote desktop) its a desktop on a server else where so you dont use your own home bandwidth.

I see what you mean, I'm not looking for a peak and off peak offer, so that's not user - the Government really should bring unlimited, we're already paying more then others around the world and get crappier internet :(
Rang TPG, thought the service was bad and they haven't sent the confirmation or any follow up info in the last two days, so I can't say I think they're reliable enough.

I'm with Bigpond now and we've decided to go with the 50gb, no peak or off peak for $89.95 on a 24 month contract, downloads at a max of 24mb/s, so I guess that's a pretty good plan, not quite what I am after in terms of download space (bandwidth), but the speed sure kicks the crap out of the max of 1.6mb/s package I had, with the max speed being around 160 kb/s.
I think that might be what I was looking for, basically when I am downloading, browsing the web I use my own home bandwidth, but I wanted something where I can do all the stuff I do, without using my home bandwidth - I think that's it.

Yes well that's right!. For the price we pay here in Australia its just getting too much!, And you look at how much Telstra & Optus are getting out of it. I would think they would team up with the Goverment and say "Lets change from copper to optic fibre cable"

Well even Telstra could just do it them self's as they would get a S**t load of clients change to them.

Australia just isen't putting enough in to its residents, its not just the internet look at half the roads, lol the Goverment has alot of thinking to do!

Yeah, I see what you mean - they really could do a lot more.

I tried iPrimus and another company and they want you to get on a phone deal, as well as a 12+ month contract to go anywhere, plus the installation fee as well - to be perfectly honest, if the speed is good and I don't get too close to 50GB, this plan should be good for now - at least until Australia does something about the possibility of unlimited internet :p

That is what recommended to avoid. Do not stick to the new web hosting company with such long term contracts

Read the first post of the thread, I'm not looking for web hosting to host my sites ;)

Btw, the issue has pretty much been resolved for now, unless anyone has some good advice :)
