Hey All, I'm relatively new to SEO so I apologize in advance if this question seems a bit silly. I noticed some successful businesses run a blog separate from their site where they use anchor text once or twice in the text to link back to their site. The content is all very relevant to their website of course. Here's my question: Is this a good way to build backlinks to your site, assuming the content quality is top notch? I'm talking about doing it yourself and being honest about it. If you sign up for blogs with your own email address and write it yourself is this something that google will key in on - does this compromise the SEO? I want to do this all honestly and the right way. Any advice at all would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!~
Creating links back to your main site by posting to your own blog can be beneficial. I don't think you want to use the same email address that may be on you website. Also, do not have your blog on the same ip address as your main site, it will not help you. Also, you want to make your posts as natural as possible. Therefore, don't use the same anchor text in your posts. Only use your main keyword once or twice and then use other anchor text phrases. For example if your text is blue widgets, use that once or twice, then use text like best blue widgets or blue widgets that work great or low-cost blue widgets. This will create natural looking backlinks. Only post once or twice from a blog to your site-multiple posts will not benefit your linking profile. Hope this helps.
Having a blog that links back to your website makes a lot of sense. This is a way that you can present relevant quality content that you will share with social media and social bookmarking. As you drive traffic to your blog they will click on the links to go to your website which is then driving traffic there. This is one of the main points of links, to drive traffic to your site. Sometimes we lose focus and get too caught up in links that will build page rank or benefit our link profile and we forget about the readers.
There's a difference between a site blog and a blog that is used for SEO link building. Though a site blog can actually improve your position in Google search for both blog and main site. So let's start out talking about the blogs which are used for linkbuilding. These blogs are usually put up by a site owner as part of a link wheel or an attempt to get artificial backlinks to a main site. The blogs are often hosted on sites like Blogger.com and Tumblr and usually only link out to one main site or in some way link to each other and then back to the main site. These blogs usually have very little valuable content and their main purpose is only to serve as part of a link chain that gives the impression the main site is more well established (with many backlinks) than it really is. These types of blogs are considered a link scheme by Google since their main purpose is to manipulate Google search and make it appear as if the site being linked to is very popular. These blogs usually don't rank well in Google search and if you use them to link to your main site, you will most likely get penalized by Google Penguin 2.0 algorithm. At this point, it's best not to participate in such a link scheme. The second type of blog used for SEO is a site or company blog and it's usually hosted on a subdomain or subfolder of the main site. This blog usually contains posts related to the industry or niche as well as company news. Often, the posts will contain links back to specific relevant pages that relate to the post content. A site blog can help your SEO and search engine ranking as it provides new content for the main site. If you want better search engine ranking for your main site it is better to host the blog on a subfolder, rather than a sub domain as these are usually treated as new sites by Google for purpose of search engine ranking.
