Question about Awstats

I use Awstats to view my log files. At the top of the screen there's "Monthly History" and "Days of the Month" which supposedly displays the unique visitors. But from my understanding whenever a visitor or searchengine robot visits the page all the images will download and register as hits or "unique visitors". In other words when a searchengine spider visits your page, if you have a dozen images on the page it will count as a dozen hits/unique visitors even though no one has actually visited the page. A more accurate count is at the bottom of the page "Search Keyphrases", which shows the actual searches.

I often buy info-products that shows the "Monthly History" and "Days of the Month" in a screenshot to supposedly display traffic. I remember once a long time ago submitting a brand new website with no traffic to about a hundred directories. The next day the log files showed about 600 hits/visitors (6 image files), but no actual searches, which is the only way any visitors would have found the site.

The monthly searches at the top of the page seems way out of whack with the stats at the bottom. Am I missing something with Awstats?

    Thanks
