Question About Affiliate Links And Lost Referrals/Potential Customers

What do you guys do to ensure that you get credit/commission for people who click on your affiliate/referral links and join/buy something, even if they took the action the next day or in the future?

Are there any methods that ensure us that we aren't losing on our commissions, simply because the person who clicked on our links, decided to save the page for future reference, or just removed our affiliate ID from the link, and purchased/joined from the main site? Some sites have these strong cookies that remain for like months, but not all do...

at the end of the day, how much money you make with the merchant matters, so its in merchants interest to have longer cookie periods
