I have noticed directories that let you submit free but they want a link back to there site which usually is a small ad. Does this just look line regular reciprocal links or does it create inbound links giving me link popularity?
You get link popularity from your inbound links. I wouldn't link to directories because they are today treated mostly like FFA, only several directories deserve backlink.
