Quaero - new Europe competitor for Google

I read news that Quaero project will be financed from Europe Union to
    compete with Google search.
EU freed 99 mil. of Euro to finance this French and German project.

In next 5 years it can be sum of 199 mil. Euro for this project. Quaero
mean "I am searching" in French language.

There are both public and private partners:

The private companies mentioned are Thomson, France Telecom, Jouve, the Euopean search engine Exalead, Bertin Technologies, LTU Technologies, Vecsys, Synapse Development.

The public research laboratories or institutes taking part are LIMSI-CNRS, RWTH-Aachen, Karlsruhe University, INRIA, LIG-UJF, IRCAM, ENST-GET, IRIT, INIST-CNRS, MIG-INRA, LIPN.

What do you mean about this info? I think that it is unbelievable where our money will finish. It is impossible to support new project and think that we will make new Europe Google.

Time is money, spending 199 million Euros to develop a Google competitor in 5 years seemed to be too little and too late. Google is not just a search engine, it had a very powerful backup clusters of thousands and thousands of servers to backup its copyrighted search algorithms. 199 million Euros won't even be able to buy a fraction of the computing power needed to power the searches if the engine gets popular.

I have to agree with you. I've just been reading the link that I put in my previous post and realised that it's from 2006 and I haven't heard of it apart from now... has it died already?

The article reads like a consipiracy theory too - I understand that all that power in the hands of one company is a dangerous situation but I believe that Google are a 'good' company ('do no evil' and all that...). Put that power in the hands of Microsoft and it would be a different story...

Plus I don't think that MS buying Google is ever going to happen as mooted in the article - that rumour is very out-of-date as we all know MS are now vying for Yahoo and that looks unlikely...

How much money goes into developing Yahoo and AltaVista - that would be interesting to know...

199 million Euros is a drop in the ocean compared to the resources at Google's disposal. The large number of partners, especially the public sector part, in my opinion will be a hindrance rather than a help as it will make the decision making process very long with each partner wanting their input, effectively too many cooks spoiling the proverbial both.

    Microsoft Market Capitalization
    $272.51B

    Google Market Capitalization
    $137.84B

As at yesterday makes it quite unlikely for a take over. Also, anti trust laws will never allow that to happen. Google buying a small outfit like Double Clicks already took them a long time to clear with EU Anti Trust.

Europeans would be fund of European creations but the look of the name 'Quaero' doesn't seem suitable, policy of Search Engines is keep it simple, 'quaero' many people can misspell with 'quearo', 'q' is a 'wacky' character.

'Euro' (the currency) is a familiar word to all European languages, it unites and everyone loves it, 'quaero' leads more to one country. A word from Latin, old-Greek with modifications in plenty of European languages could be a good choice.

completely agree. as european really looking forward to such a big creation.

a much simpler name could do the trick.. here in spain we have a huge classified ads site called loquo.com whom's name also decends from greek terms and simple to spell (or maybe not)

Quaero is from the Greek 'to seek' ...it's also a French word and a Spanish word with similar meanings I think...

Could be Esperanto (sp?) for all I care tho ;)

...too little too late? I think that Google may end up getting split up to take away it's monopoly.

If it's old-Greek it's ok :) 'loquo' is simplier than 'quaero', 'q' letter is not present in all European languages (Czech, Slovakian, Slovenian, Estonian, Lithuanian...), 'qeuro' compromise? :)

You have true, it looks like ATTEMPT to create artificial competition. But some time ago, I know and use only Altavista and Yahoo from time to time and Google didn't exist. Never say never.

I can tell ^^ Quaero means nothing in french nor does it remind any words ...

Qua ? like 4 (Quater or Quatre)?
aero ? like aero in flying (aéronautique) ?

Would it be something for flying ??? I dont think so ^^.

So why Quaero ... Here is some news :
    http://www.quaero.org/modules/movie/scenes/home/index.php?fuseAction=article&rubric=presentation&article=presentationPourquoiQuaero&FUSEBOX_LANG=2

Nothing new thought ... Norvegian, German and French project are still in progress. Today in europe, Exalead has got a special mention for conviviality and pertinence. But so far, Google is the better and ... our friend.
