Q - Backlinks on Related Sites vs Unreleated Sites

For ages i have been hearing "Leave backlinks on sites and on forums in your signature which are ONLY related to your sites content"

My question is, how true is this?

For example if your site is about fishing, how well is a backlink going to do in a forum signature here on DP or any other webmaster forum?

Should you be leaving backlinks in sigs on every forum your on and every site you come across or should your strictly limit it to related sites only?

I don't think so. That is a fallacy and still alot of people believe this.

But it is also possible because google search engine can compare the anchor link text and the meta tag description of the site linked-to. But adding this on a search engine can increase the query time.

    Or

Google search engine is using Meta-to-Meta Description comparison. Meta description of the referring site is compared to the meta description of the site linked to.

That's all i can think of.

I personally think nearly every link has the potential to help. It makes sense that a relevant back link should count for more, but the other links should still help a bit. Those links shouldn't ever hurt your rankings though.

Remember that the search engines don't want it to be possible for a site to sabotage another site's rankings by doing something the other site can't control.

I also agree and believe that every backlink, no matter where it comes from will help in some sort of way or another...Even if its just to build up your site value incase you sell one day....

As for the meta comment....I can see that, but then again your always hearing how meta data doesnt mean anything anymore due to google and the bots hardly using it...

Me too, relevant links should work better but the others also work...apart of links from link farms or sites with a bad reputation I don't think that links can damaged your PR or rankings

All links will help to a certain extent, but relevant backlinks are far more useful. The entire page does not have to be relevant to your content, but the surrounding 20 words or so seems to be very important.

when it comes to page rank I don't think it matters if the site is relevant, but if you want to improve you serp rankings linking to a site with relevant content will help
