I did a search with no city attached and Google brings up my adwords ad. I'm not logged in, so why is that happening? I have a specific region. So if I don't specifty a city in the search I should not come up right? Conversely I did the same search with my city and only one Google adword ad came up, not mine. Odd no?
kevs, promise me you'll go here http://adwords.google.com/support/aw/bin/static.py?hl=en&guide=21899&page=guide.cs and read all the help files and guides that Google provide, because you are just going to be throwing money away if you don't understand how adwords works. If you have set your keywords to have the name of the city as part of the search phrase, and they are at exact or phrase match, then yes, your ad will only show if someone includes the name of the city in the query e.g "Florist in Paris" is your keyword - you set it to phrase match and your ad will show for "Florist in Paris" and also "Florist in Paris open on Sunday" It will not show for "Florist", unless "Florist" is also in your campaign as an exact, phrase or broad match, regardless of whether they are in Paris, or Manchester. Geo-targeting is not dependent on keywords. If someone in Rome searches for "Florist in Paris" and your geo-targeting has not specified that you want your ad to only show in Paris, then they will trigger your ad. As to your ad not coming up when you searched - unless you have sufficient budget to cover showing every time your keyword is serached for, Google will show your ad sporadically throughout 24 hours (as I told you in a previous reply), so no, it may not show everytime you search for it. And don't search for your own ads without using the tool that Google provide for that - https://adwords.google.com/select/AdTargetingPreviewTool this tool also allows you to see how your geo-targeting is or isn't working.
thanks, don't undertstand. I selected Los Angeels as my Geo area. so why would the term come up without a city specified? uNless Google knows where I am. But I've signed out of Google.
Kevs, sounds like you are totally confused about how all this works. I suggest you pause everything and start learning before going further. Magda's first link is a good place to start.
Thanks, Well, I'm reading the Adwords for Dummies. I just ordered two books. I just left a message with you too! I'm going to learn trust me. But I need to jump in. Not spending that much really. I cannot just read the help menu. It's too convoluted and poorly written. this was a simple question: If I select a region, Los Angeles. Doesn't Google limit the searches to people who also put in a city with the search term? ie LA, Los Angeles, Pasadena? I was surprised to see my Adwords search term come up with no city -- but maybe Google know where I am -- maybe they see my IP address? that's my guess
Yes, your second assumption is the correct one - Geo-targeting depends on the location of the searchers IP, NOT whether they include Los Angeles in the search query.
Thanks Magda. So even when I'm in the offical preview window, I don't put a city. There my ad it. Does not mean a guy from Texas is seeing my ad when he put in the same search term. That being said, I guess you just have to trust the syteme as there is no way then to know how a generic search nationwide would look.
