Purchasing a dedicated server from HostGator?

If you purchase a dedicated server from HostGator or other hosting services, do you actually physically get the server in the mail? And is it easy to set up/maintain if there is a glitch with the hardware?

    Thanks!

No, that's not how it works. Firstly, you are renting the server. They still maintain it, and give you full remote access to it.

Yes, 'zacdavis' is correct - but you also have a choice of VPS, and Semi Dedicated servers - which can be leased on their own or fully managed.

You can read up on the differences on our site and download our free ebook which may help explain more.

    All the best.

Your still renting the servers. If you want to physically own it, this will refer to as a co-location where you have to assemble your own server and mail it in for them to rack. Usually if your renting the servers, most of the hardware they'll maintain.

Think of a dedicated server as a condo or apartment you are renting that is not physically located where you are. You have to go to it to furnish it, and occupy it. You do this remotely of course without every physically visiting the server. You do not own the hardware, you rent it. Your rent typically includes the device, support, bandwidth, power, and in some cases management.
