I own a blog that will soon be published. When a user signs up, I cannot verify that they are who they say. What if: someone joins under someone elses identity, and they publish that person's contact information on my blog. Could I be liable under US laws? There are some sales people who will write blogs on my site. I would hate to restrict everyone, across the board, from publishing their contact information for this reason. Thanks for your attention to this question.
Yes you can. Ask them to fax you a copy of their drivers license or other id. You have a certain amount of responsibility and you can get sued for anything in the USA but it's pretty unlikely.
For a blog? This seems a bit intensive. I'm 99% sure you're not liable, unless it's ridiculously sensitive kinds of information...
