Proxy owners

Do you actually make money? I was just considering making a small proxy network of maybe 5 sites...

For a year of hosting this would come out to about $350 with Dreamhost, one of the top recommended sites by proxy owners.
Then you have to put your time into it.

And after this investment, I only see people talking about how they are making $2-3 a day on their sites

How long does it take you to break the $10 mark? $100? $1000?

Seriously, I just dont see it being a good investment...Just looking for someone to prove me wrong :p

    Thanks

Uh, Dreamhost? Yeah right, crappy host... Can hardly handle my normal sites, proxies would be terrible.

Proxy sites are hard to monitize and cost a lot to host.

Yes, I got into it about 6 months ago and I yet to get to break-even stage :( Problem is a DECENT hosting cost kills the project.

Your best bet on hosting is to do a Dedicated Server. We tried everything from shared to VPS and they all shut us down with only 30,ooo page views a month. A different twist on proxies is to monetize them with products you own or affiliate. get larger profits than ad-sense.

I got into proxy hosting 6 months ago, I started out on shared proxy hosting servers, but i never found them to be that good, so now i use dedicated servers for my proxies, But that costs a lot and takes work to even breakeven, but i find the faster and more responsive your proxy the more it gets used :p

Ask some pros and do some research before deciding. Techentrance.com is perfect for what you are looking for. They specialize in proxy hosting. Very cheap yet great service. However I recommend you don't start until school starts again. It will just be a waste of money. Also when you can host 4-5 sites on $25/month each earning at least $1/day you can see the huge profit this can bring if you multiply that by 5 such as 25 sites for $75 each earning at least $1/day. I usually get a site up and running and spend $10 promoting it and then leave it alone. I have only lost money in my very first proxies but now I earn decent money. If you need more help I wrote an E-Book that could help you get started.

You need a good VPS or even dedicated server to get them mounted on because in fact the resources they use up is more than video sharing sites. Many tried building proxies to earn quick cash, it's easy, simply upload the script that's all. But they didn't really consider many aspects, which one of the major one is having a good server

People. Stop trying to steer this person wrong. He does not need a VPS or Dedicated server for what he wants to start with. Maybe if you had 15+ the money you brought in would allow you to get a dedicated server if you wanted one. I suggest you start reading the proxy discussion thread. Read a few pages from the past month and it will explain much of what you want to know. You could even ask your question there and get the same answer I gave you.
