U need to give more details, like number and type of proxies, eg cgi ?

I use Dual Opeterons and 4GB RAM, and still get some server troubles running a proxy network is hard work !

Dual Core Dual Opteron with 8 GB RAM - heh not trying to out do you Marx, thats really hte processor and RAM I use on both servers.

I too have some lag during peak hours but the 8GB of RAM really makes it not too bad, I used to operate with only 4GB untill about 3 months ago and it really made the difference.

Good hardware is a good investment, because the restraining factor of your visitors is nto page views but time. If they have 30 minutes to surf the web, then they will stay on your site for 30 minutes only. If you can cut page load time by 5 seconds you can get a lot of extra traffic during peak hours, and with good advertising in place thats definately worht the investment.

How many proxies sites do you run on that type of server?

3 proxies per server, but these are big proxies. I have two servers. The OS was stripped down to bear minimum, and the entire server is optimized for the proxies.

You can have a Intel 2.0Ghz Pentium 4 server with 512MB RAM and a Intel Dual Core 3.8Ghz Pentium 4 server with 4GB RAM. The performance will be almost 16 times greater on the second model. The price will be significantly higher as well. There are many factors of a server that detirmine performance and price.

Nice! How many uniques (or page views) each of you servers handle daily? How many uniques were they handling daily before updrading to 8GB ram? Can you please post or PM me the link to any one of your proxy sites running on these servers?

I would rather not post the URL's but they handle in excess of half a million uniques and 5 million page views on a monthly basis.

16-17,000 uniques daily, nice :) Thanks for sharing mate. How much bandwith they consume? I guess, around 1500-2000GB each monthly?

I use around 6,000GB of bandwidth on a monthly basis. Thats between both servers, I pull bandwidth together.

3,000GB each? This would be the total bandwidth available to your servers per month i think. Do they consume all of this bandwidth? From my experience, you can server 7.5 million page views with 3000GB bandwidth (50% more than your current page views, 5 million).

I run my proxies on the CGIProxy script, and it has custom modifications made to it, the bandwidth usage might be a bit higher then on a normal PHPProxy.

I'm on an a low end server this these specs:
    AMD Athlon 2400
    1 GB RAM
40 GB hard drive (since when do I need space for a proxy?)
100mbit unmetered line (the only good thing about it)

I have the server optimized for both CGI and PHP Proxy.

Thats impossible to do effectivly, by optimizing to one you are hindering performance of the other and vice versa. The optimizations you have are not nearly as close to optimum performance of your server for just one of those scripts.

Friends, actually i am getting problem, that sometime my server lags up.. and my website gets timed out. they dosnt open just shows opening website..

i use 10 website.. but after reading you peoples reply i realize that i am putting too much load on server..
i get many hits for one of my proxies like 4k unique as it christmas but 7k usually or more than that. !

    i have
    AMD 2400
    1gbram
    1500gb bandwidth

i think this is kinda not too good server for my 10 website out of 8 are proxies and out of 8, 6 are CGI proxies. Please advice !

CGI Proxy is very server intensive. From what my server admin has told me, it is recommended that you have at least 2 GB of RAM to run it. But if you have 6 CGI proxies running and are already lagging, you need to upgrade to a faster server, not just a RAM upgrade.

Your bottlenecking factor is not just RAM but Processor as well. Your probably not even using all of your RAM because your processor is lagging too much.

    Definately upgrade servers.

CGI proxy needs mod_perl to work fast, and there are other optimizations that can be done to reduce overhead.

I have made some scripts for that and server around 3.5 mil pageviews from a amd 64 box with 1gb ram with no problems. If you are interesting let me know I can sell those scripts ;)

Also you should always monitor the referers of your proxies as there are many adult sites out there that can produce unwanted overhead/bandwidth usage.
