Check out my Directory List. Just remember that some higher pr directories take months to review free submissions. Newer directories will review much faster. Good luck...
What exactly are you trying to accomplish with directory listings? Google is hunting down most paid directories and keeping them from passing page rank. Even if they have a free section, but they charge for other links they still might not let the directory pass page rank. I gave up on directory listings some time ago. I still feel that dmoz, the Google directory and the Yahoo Business directory still have value. That's just my two cents.
You can also just check out the buy/sell/trade section, there are plenty of people there doing very cheap directory submission services. Saves you a lot of time of doing them yourself and they will give you a list of where they submitted to. Slingshot is right though, a lot of directories are being penalized and there PR has been lowered and they either no longer pass any PR or what they do pass is much smaller then what it used to be.
I don't think directories as a whole are being eliminated. I think they are being trimmed down to size according to quality. Exclusive directories to valuable resources moderated by smart people will always be in demand. It's the Free-for-all link farm directories that are rightfully being nullified, but that gives the higher quality directories that much more juice, IMO.
You're right kenbrower, but really good quality link directories are few and far between. Most of the decent directories are paid and industry specific. Google doesn't like the paid directories and the either expect them to use nofollow or keep them from passing PR. There are a few diamonds out there, but they are hard to find and only in select industries.
